Centre County Area Guide

Centre County is a county located in Pennsylvania and is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2007, Centre County was home to 144,658. Centre County was created on February 13, 1800, from parts of Huntingdon, Lycoming, Mifflin, and Northumberland counties and named for its central location in the state. Its county seat is Bellefonte. The area is located in the midst of beautiful mountains, friendly communities, and top-notch schools. Centre County is the perfect place to live, work and raise a family. The area is close to Penn State University which offers access to its resources and has a flourishing hi-tech business sector. Centre County is home to businesses that offer a thriving and varied job market.

In 1764, James Potter was the first to record his exploration of the area. Having reached the top of Nittany Mountain, and "....seeing the prairies and noble forest beneath him, cried out to his attendant, 'By heavens, Thompson, I have discovered an empire!'"

Harry Smith Festival

Harry Smith Festival Second Annual Harry Smith Festival benefiting the Penns Valley Hope Fund. To understate, Harry Smith was a collector and archivist of traditional American music. This benefit features eight bands performing songs from the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, a multi-volume compilation of folk, blues, country and uncategorized authentic recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932 but continue to serve as inspiration to everyone from Steve Earle to Lucinda Williams.

Junior Baroque Music Festival

The three-day 2010 Junior Baroque Music Festival, "Handel in London," is designed for student musicians through age 19. The festival offers master classes on baroque music and style with guest artists from the Aulos Ensemble, live demonstrations of baroque instruments, rehearsals of a baroque masterwork, and more. The weekend culminates in a Best of Baroque concert involving all festival participants and featuring top student performers.
